AMD Offers Better Features Than DLSS

AMD provides new features for the launch of the Navi series RX 5700 and RX 5700XT with FidelityFX and Radeon Image Sharpening. The main objectives of both are for upscaling and post-processing which will compete with NVIDIA's DLSS. The first feature is the Radeon Image Sharpening, a sharpening solution that enhances image quality during upscaling without giving a significant performance impact. This Radeon Image Sharpening system is very useful especially more and more types of monitors that offer 4K resolution, where users benefit from getting bigger workspaces but are very heavy for gaming.The presence of an upscaling process like this is very, very interesting because it can increase a lot more detail and not blurry or blurry the resulting image.


AMD managed to create a technology that makes 1080p textures look like 1440p textures through their image sharpening. The performance blows experienced by NVIDIA for running DLSS is quite large compared to AMD which is still quite consistent in maintaining FPS around 89, but in DLSS around 42 FPS. Another uniqueness of the system used by AMD is that in addition to making details sharper or crispy, all reproduced images do not interfere with anti-aliasing which can sometimes look blurry especially in plants, leaves, and fences. The bigger difference from DLSS is because of the Radeon Image Sharpening, it doesn't have to depend on the game developer implementation, no need to use DXR in the game.

This feature can be used in any game and is not required by the developer to implement it, unlike DLSS which is integrated through DXR or its Ray Tracing feature. However, the limitation is that this can be implemented now only for DX12 games. A more complete and better picture feature is through FidelityFX, this is an open-source developer toolkit that can be implemented in games. Still in accordance with AMD's philosophy with its openness. The most important and significant feature here is Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS), which is still more or less the same as Radeon Image Sharpening technology.

 The difference from Radeon Image Sharpening is that FidelityFX requires the implementation of each game, so this feature is similar to DLSS where for the implementation, it requires the role of the developer. The difference is that all of these are open-source and free to be used by developers through AMD's GPUopen.com, even AMD says this technology will be able to be used in NVIDIA's VGA-VGA. Of course, compared to the Radeon Image Sharpening with FidelityFX, the customization system will be richer in FidelityFX because the system used in the Radeon Image Sharpening is only two modes, namely on or off, while at FidelityFX, developers can provide sharpness levels and how much you want to customize the appearance of your game.
